Green innovations refers to the establishment of policies and technologies that aim to preserve the ecosystem. These advancements may be introduced in the existing technologies and systems with the goal of aligning them in accordance with the principles of ecological sustainability. With the rapid increase in pollution and depletion of natural resources, it has become a global necessity to bring green innovations in our societies. 


The aims associated with green innovations include minimising carbon emissions, reducing wastes, reusing resources, promoting eco-friendly practices and using renewable energy resources. 


Green innovations will help us to revolutionise our societies and attain ecological sustainability.  A lot of recyclable and eco-friendly products are either too costly or unreliable. To overcome these difficulties, the global experts are working to increase their efficiencies. 


Examples of green innovations: 


SOLAR DESALINATION OF SEAWATER: 

With the rapid growth in population and pollution, the need for fresh water has been increasing accordingly. One great example of green innovations is the solar desalination of water. The cost efficiency as well as the ecological benefits of this innovation makes it an exemplary approach to establish an ecologically sustainable environment.



E-WASTE RECYCLING:

E-wastes or electronic wastes is the waste produced by electronic products. We need to cut on e-wastes and introduce e-waste recycling to avoid land pollution as well as harmful effects of landfills. Each one of us needs to take measures individually by avoiding dumping of electronics. Spreading awareness regarding e-wastes is also crucial for ecological sustainability.


USE OF RENEWABLE SOURCES OF ENERGY:

With the rapid increase of energy needs and depletion of natural resources along with the harmful effects of carbon emissions into the atmosphere, it has become a necessity to switch from carbon fuels to renewable energy sources like solar power, wind power and geothermal. This will help reduce carbon emissions and the access of electricity would become a lot cheaper. 



VERTICAL FARMING:

Vertical farming refers to the practice of growing crops in the form of vertical stacks with the aim of optimising plant growth under controlled nutritional levels and reducing land use. This may include practice of soilless agricultural techniques like hydroponics or aquaponics. This green innovation ensures growth of pesticide-free plants and high yield of crops with reduced water wastes. Vertical farming is one of the key elements for building an ecologically sustainable environment. 


AQUAPONICS:

Aquaponics refers to the phenomenon in which aquaculture and agriculture are combined together to produce high yield of product with efficient reduction in waste. The mechanism of aquaponics is interesting as it involves addition of nutrients by the fish's excretory wastes, cleansing of water and addition of oxygen into the water by plants which reduces the cost of oxygen tank, water filtration and addition of nutrients. It's a self-sustaining ecosystem which reduces water loss and pollution, establishing ecological sustainability. 



BIODEGRADABLE LEATHER:

Plant-based leathers manufactured by using pineapples, berries, grapes, coconut or cactus, are biodegradable and environmentally friendly. Leather industry has long been associated with water and air pollution as the chemicals used for the manufacturing of leather are ecologically harmful. We need to switch towards alternatives of leather that are biodegradable as well as durable. This is also a form of green innovation and a necessity to promote ecological sustainability. 




Every small step we take towards the path of ecologically sustainable environment counts.
